Balance groups
play a key role in the operation of the Hungarian electricity system, ensuring
that power generation and consumption are always in balance. The purpose of
balance groups is to make the energy consumption of their members more
predictable and efficient, and to settle any over- or under-consumption or
generation within a given period. This ensures a stable and reliable operation
of the electricity system, while minimizing the costs of balancing energy.
According to Section 3
(46) of Act No. LXXXVI of 2007, a balance group is:
“A clearing group of one or more members established to
regulate liability relationships in relation to the causal determination and
settlement of balancing energy use and the performance of related tasks.”
The operation of balance groups and the tasks of balance
responsible parties (BRP) are specified in the prevailing National Network
Code (NÜKSZ) approved by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility
Regulatory Authority.
The largest balance group in the Hungarian electricity
system is operated by MVM ONEnergy Ltd. Through MVM Next Energy Trading
Ltd., the company supplies electricity to a significant part of the Hungarian
population. The members of MVM ONEnergy Ltd.'s balance group comprise
subsidiaries of the MVM Group as well as external market players. In
addition to generators, over 60,000 competitive market consumers are
included, thereby making MVM ONEnergy Ltd. the largest domestic commercial
licensee.
Joining the balance group offers numerous advantages: in
addition to the security arising from many years of operational experience, the
large number of customers and energy turnover result in a significant balancing
effect. This reduces the amount of balancing energy required and minimizes the
associated costs. In addition, MVM ONEnergy Ltd. contributes to the stable
operation of the Hungarian electricity system and to the continuous and smooth
energy supply through its system-level services.
Within the company, the daily operational BRP tasks are
performed by the Scheduling and Balance Group Management Department (MIO).
MIO not only manages MVM ONEnergy Ltd.’s Hungarian balance group, but also
performs BRP tasks for other foreign balance groups belonging to the MVM Group.
